30 Years of Experience with Veterans' Issues

Charles Miles

VA Accredited Claims Agent
Admitted to practice at the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims

Charles is a disabled veteran and is accredited by VA as a veterans’ claims agent and is admitted to practice before the US Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC).

He served in the 1991 Gulf War as an Abrams tank crewman, and in 1995 was co-founder and first executive director of the National Gulf War Resource Center in Washington, DC. In that role he testified before Congressional Committees and the Presidential Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans’ Illnesses, and co-authored the first ever Self-Help Guide for Gulf War Veterans published by the National Veterans Legal Service Project.

In 2002 Charles co-founded Veterans for Common Sense. VCS was instrumental in bringing to national light the crisis of veterans’ suicides, with a lawsuit filed against VA that we fought all the way to the Supreme Court. In response, VA established the Veterans Crisis Line and other programs to assist veterans in need. During VCS’s merger with Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation from 2006 to 2008, Charles helped produce the American Veterans’ and Servicemembers’ Survival Guide.

Charles continues to serve on the board of directors of VCS and is a member of the National Organization of Veterans’ Advocates and the CAVC Bar Association.

Erik Gustafson

Veterans Claims Assistant

Erik Gustafson is a U.S. Army Veteran of the Gulf War who is dedicated to addressing the human costs of war, both for veterans at home and civilians abroad. He is now applying his decades of experience to directly assist his fellow veterans as a Claims Assistant alongside his long-time colleague, Charles Miles, at Miles Veterans Claims Agency, LLC.

Following his service, Erik's advocacy began with co-founding Gulf War Veterans of Wisconsin to address the legacy of Gulf War-related toxic exposures. In 1998, he joined the Board of the National Gulf War Resource Center, advocating for landmark legislation like the Persian Gulf Veterans Act of 1998. That same year, he also founded the Enabling Peace in Iraq Center (EPIC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of peace and development in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, which he continues to lead today. In 2002, Erik, Charles, and other Gulf War veterans co-founded Veterans for Common Sense (VCS) to raise key questions about the rush to invade Iraq and advocate for a national security strategy grounded in reason.

Erik's professional work in humanitarian and human rights fields, leading efforts to assist vulnerable populations in post-conflict zones like Iraq, further demonstrates his enduring commitment to service. He brings this unique background, along with strong analytical skills and a profound understanding of the veteran experience, to his mission of helping veterans secure the benefits they have earned.

Erik is a member of the National Organization of Veterans’ Advocates.
